Chapter Nine

A knock sounded on the door, and Eryn sat straight up in bed.

She could hear Anya’s soft footfalls as she made her way to open it up.

Eryn grabbed her big knife from the nightstand and bolted in there to back her up in case it was Slaughter.

It wasn’t though.

Kian stood there, down off the porch in the thick snow, asking Anya if Eryn was still awake.

“I’ll be right back in,” she assured Anya, grabbing a blanket off the hook near the front door.

She wrapped the quilt around her shoulders and stepped out onto the porch.

Kian pulled something out from under his arm and offered it to her. It was a book, tied closed with twine.

Eryn stepped down the stairs to close the space between them.

Kian was wearing his thickest jacket and a pair of jeans over his work boots. The dark blue beanie he wore over his ears made his blue eyes look even brighter, and his dark beard looked thicker.

He looked so handsome. So vulnerable and uncertain, yet strong.

She took the leather-bound book from him. “What is this?”

“I was never good at words, Eryn. Didn’t mean I didn’t feel anything though.” He ran his hand down his facial scruff, turned, and sauntered toward his running truck. “Start from the beginning,” he called without looking over his shoulder.

Stunned, she stood there like a bump on a log as he climbed into his truck and drove away.

Okaaay.

Eryn made her way back inside, careful to latch the door locked behind her.

“Everything okay?” Anya asked sincerely from the mouth of her bedroom.

“I don’t know. I don’t know anything anymore,” Eryn admitted.

She offered her friend a goodnight, and then closed the door to her room before she curled her legs on her bed as she settled in and untied the twine binding.

There was a folded note on top, and she opened it carefully.
